The Valve Brake is an exhaust brake. Here's how it works:

1. Activation: When the operator pushes the brake pedal past a certain point or engages a separate retarder control lever, the valve brake system is activated.
2. Restriction: A butterfly valve (the "valve" in "valve brake") located in the engine's exhaust system closes, severely restricting the flow of exhaust gases.
3. Backpressure: This restriction creates high pressure in the exhaust manifold and engine cylinders.
4. Braking Force: The engine, now forced to pump against this pressure, acts as a compressor. This compression work absorbs a massive amount of the vehicle's kinetic energy, converting it into heat, which is then dissipated through the exhaust and engine cooling systems. This process creates a powerful braking effect on the drivetrain, slowing the machine down.
